Will it replace Instagram?
A study among teenage TikTok users found that those who are addicted to TikTok experience higher rates of anxiety, stress and depression, and weaker working memory than those who use the app less frequently. There was a time where content and media was at a much slower pace. These studies prove that fast content and fast media is not what people desire. Much like fast food or fast fashion; these things just aren’t good for us in the long run.
Ever watched movies from 50 years ago, let’s even say a 100 years ago? They were much slower paced. Movies such as “Citizen Kane” and “Gone with the wind” are classics and boy oh boy did these movies go on for a long time. The timing and pacing of the frame of each shot was much slower as well. Another feature in classic films and media of the past was the long shot or spacious and gracious framing. Now videos and media tend to have what they call tight framing. The person’s face is often zoomed right in. The background is often blurred too sometimes. Leaving out the “Mise en scence” or the intentional placement of all objects and all background staging coordinating with the main focus on the screen or the frame.
Have our attention spans really gotten worse? Or has the media itself gotten worse? If you are given fast paced media that is disorganized, aren’t you going to become that way too? Just like fast food or fast fashion, do people really like it? Or do some people not have another better option?
The birth of the new fast media dawned when advertisements were competing for time on television and then on the internet as well. Advertisements had to get as much as they possibly can in as little time as possible. Longer ads cost more money. The product had to always be in focus losing the once beloved ‘Mise en scene”, which is French by the way. Therefore you know it is classy. Advertisements pay for a lot of the big box movies on that beautiful silver screen or even Netflix. They needed to keep that pace with the ads on the TV to hide and blur the way of the ads and the movies to make it all appear normal. But, this is what it is doing to people.
